Could You Have Food Allergies and Not Know It?

September 25, 2017Blog

Food allergens are commonly be known as The Big 8: milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, and soy. Similarly, a food allergy is commonly related to anaphylaxis.

Could You Have Food Allergies and Not Know It?

However, you might find that every time you eat a mango that your skin gets red and itchy. Or, you might notice that you have diarrhea after you eat corn. You may have grown up eating these foods and may have never noticed any symptoms, or have accepted the symptoms as a part of your dietary pattern.

Food allergens and food allergy symptoms are often less common or widely recognized than The Big 8 and anaphylaxis. However, they still can disrupt your daily life and affect your health and well-being.

According to Healthline, less common food allergy symptoms include:

  • skin irritation in the form of itching, rashes or hives,
  • gastrointestinal discomfort in the form of diarrhea, nausea or cramping,
  • respiratory distress in the form of throat tightness, coughing, or straining to breathe, and
  • other alarming sensations in for form of tingling, swelling, and even dizziness.

Take notice of any symptoms you have after eating certain foods. You do not have to live a life of discomfort from undiagnosed food allergies. Your quality of life can improve simply by eliminating a food allergen from your diet. Remembering that a food allergy could be from an uncommon source, or cause an uncommon reaction is the first step to better health.

If you think that you might have an uncommon food allergy, contact us today to schedule an evaluation. We can help you pinpoint your allergens and provide you with a personalized plan for living your life free of food allergy symptoms.
