Seasonal Texas Allergies
Texas has multiple cities ranked in the top ten cities in the US listed among the worst places for allergy sufferers. Lucky, Dallas is not one of them. The worst cities in Texas are McAllen, Texas, and San Antonio Texas. Houston is up there too.
Winter:
In many locations throughout the United States, allergies seem to disappear in the colder and more frigid months of winter. However, this is not the case for Texas. It is actually quite the contrary where winter is actually the worst season for allergies in Texas. Texas is well known for its beautiful cedar trees and annual cases of cedar fever. In many cases, people think that they are suffering from the flu, when in reality, they are suffering from allergies provoked by cedar trees.
Spring:
Allergies in Texas in the spring tend to be similar to the rest of the nation. The main cause of these allergens is again trees. Oak trees, to be more specific. This is because these trees have new leaves at this time of year which causes pollen. The changes in air pressure, temperature, and wind patterns also do not help. Other trees to watch out for in the spring include: cottonwood, elm, ash and pecan, all of which are allergen-producing trees.
Summer:
Texas allergies in the summer usually come from grass including: Bahia, Bermuda, Orchard, Sweet Vernal, and Timothy. These grasses grow on the sides of roads, parking lots, and other areas that are not well maintained or are abandoned.
Fall:
The major player for fall Texas allergies is Ragweed. This affects many people because of the temperate areas of Texas. These bring on strong reactions because the plants grow more freely at this time of year emitting as many as one billion pollen grains each fall season.
How to deal with Texas Allergies
Allergy season in Texas is all year long. Sometimes it is stronger than others and sometimes you will know even before you watch the news simply as soon as you wake up. Here are a few ways to stay ahead of the your allergies:
- Get rid of your carpet. Sweeping floors is much easier than vacuuming and gets rid of more dust than what can live in your carpet for years.
- Try allergy medications that you can find over-the-counter.
- clear out your sinus and nasal cavities with a warm water solution such as a neti pot.
