Asthma! I Can’t Breathe!
In 2009 one in 12 Americans were effected by asthma. According to the Mayo Clinic, asthma is defined as a narrowing or swelling of the airways and production of excess mucus. This can lead to shortness of breath, coughing, chest tightness, and wheezing. The seriousness of the condition can range from a minor nuisance to a severe issue that can be triggered by different factors. A severe asthma attack can not only put you in the hospital but cause permanent damage to your respiratory system. Unfortunately there is no cure for asthma, but there are several ways to control it.
The easiest way to control your asthma is by working with your doctor to identify your various symptoms and triggers. Asthma.com identifies the following triggers;
Allergens
- Cockroaches
- Dust mites
- Indoor mold
- Outdoor mold
- Pets
- Pollen
Irritants
- Strong odors
- Sprays
- Smoke
Other
- Colds
- Respiratory infections
- Food sensitivities
- Exercise
- Weather
- Stress
Here are a few ways to manage your asthma;
- keep your house clean in order to keep allergens and irritants minimized
- keep yourself healthy to avoid respiratory infections and colds
- talk to your doctor about prescribing a type of inhaler that you can either take regularly or in case of an attack.
- work with your doctor on an Asthma Action Plan for long-term management
It’s important to keep in mind that this condition changes just like the rest of your body. That’s not to say it will keep getting worse but be sure to revisit your Asthma Action Plan with your doctor, especially if your symptoms worsen or you develop new triggers.
